So in a last ditch effort to salvage my data off an internal hard drive I can't access, I've decided to buy another hard drive and external enclosure. I was going to do this anyway and use my current hard drive as a back up but I guess this just sped things up (I realize I have a thread on trying to solve the problem but I feel like this thread could be of benefit to other people and is addressing something rather different)

For my new laptop hard drive I went to Newegg, searched for laptop hard drive at 7200 rpm, found the largest one (500 GB) and I think I am going to go with that one. My current one is a 250 GB 5400 rpm drive.

For my enclosure also at Newegg, I searched for one with an internal interface of SATA (I believe that is what my hard drive is), $10-$25 and went with the drive with the best rating.

Any objections or other recommendations?

I would go for one of these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817334012) and one of these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152168).

One enclosure is much the same as another and I like Samsung hard drives.

I was a little worried about a cheap external enclosure because the last one I bought and didn't even work in Windows. It worked in Ubuntu though.

I prefer Samsung drives over Seagate drives but I feel like the upgrade from 5400 rpm to 7400 rpm and the cache being upgraded from 8 MB to 16 MB might be worth an extra $30.

I'd probably go with the Seagate, higher RPM and cache are worth it to me. Enclosures are pretty standard too, I don't know if I'd spend $22 on one but that's just me.

My other recommendation: Figure out what interface your drive is :D. If it's the system in your sig it's certainly SATA but it's good to be sure.

For use in a USB enclosure the lower 5400 RPM won't make any difference to speed, but it will run cooler and more quietly.

The model of enclosure I suggested is one which I have and it works just fine.
