I know it's bad form to compare with, and hark back to, that other family of operating systems. However, that is where I have come from. That is where I am weaning myself from.

In Windows XP Classic it is possible to go from the Start Button, via the menu structure, to a favorite or a document of your choice.

How do I do this in GNOME?

Places->Bookmarks
or
Places->Recent documents

Places->Bookmarks

This would be very useful if I had it, but I don't.

Did you rig this up yourself?

Places->Recent documents

The recent document menu only deals with the last ten files accessed. In Windows XP it gives you immediate access to the last ten or fifteen files, but if the one you are looking for isn't there, it allows you to open up a tree of shortcuts corresponding to "My Documents". I seek the GNOME equivalent to this.
