I am downloading the "FREE" download of Elive 1.9.29 "Compiz" edition, released on June 11 2009. I was wondering if anybody else is using this new Elive e17 "Compiz" edition?

Judging from this YouTube video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=ES&hl=es&v=cH9WLrcsrx8) it looks pretty exciting.

Nice to see Elive doing free downloads also.

I remember playing with Elive about a year ago,it wasn't stable for me.
Then I've tried the newest release from the sources and it also wasn't stable - but that was to be expected as it was taken from the "sources" thus unstable ;)

But overall it's a pretty good Desktop, although for some reason I liked E16 more then E17, must be because of the small side windows in E16 that was removed in E17.

Do you have a screen shot of what you're talking about?

Noticed that too, I can only applaud such behaviour.

Paying for Debian i386 optimizations is well...rather ridiculous, regardless of how much bling there is....especially when E isn't all that stable in the best of circumstances.

Elive is free (at least I downloaded Elive for free directly from their website), but like all distros donations are encouraged.

The (at times very unstable) testing versions are free. The stable versions must be payed for to download...the next ELive stable will be free to download, but to install will need to be payed for.

As I said, it is silly to expect folks to pay for Debian i386.

I do have to say that I just booted into the new Elive 1.9.29 "Compiz" edition

I think I may install Elive Compiz Edition It is by far the most beautiful OS I have ever seen!

Everything is working very fast, very stable and beautifully!

This is an amazing build!

Compiz works seamlessly and is very awesome, the default settings are perfect!

attached is a screenshot of unadulterated virgin default live boot:

here is another screenshot, I would have never believed Compiz could work so nicely until I seen it in Elive!

What is the speed like?

I find E17 more efficient to use than either KDE or GNOME.
Are the Compiz enhancements built into E17 now or are they only part of Elive?

There is ecomorph (http://code.google.com/p/itask-module/wiki/Stuff), a 'hacked' version of compiz for enlightenment. Read also this (http://cafelinux.org/OzOs/content/how-install-ecomorph-ozos-e17) on how to install. I'm running it on Ubuntu with E17 SVN version 41055 and I like it a lot.

Speed is extremely super fast! fastest OS that I have ever witnessed!

MoonOS (http://moonos.co.cc) has been using E17 quite successfully and beautifully (and they don't charge for it or have a free "trial version"). It has been, perhaps until only recently, the only stable E17 distro available. And best of all, it's built on Ubuntu! They also have an LXDE version for older computers that is superduper lightweight and fast.

Great! so MoonOS is available with Compiz also?

I don't think so, but Compiz isn't that hard to install...

Anyway...on topic...

E17 is far too unstable to be an enjoyable experience for me. I've tried it on "top" of many distributions, Arch, Debian, OzOS, etc. None of them worked to my liking. And the Elive people "charging" for use is just plain idiotic and against the idealogy of FOSS, in my opinion, it's almost as bad as the iMagic people...

Read the main page: http://www.elivecd.org/Download/Stable

Elive is free and made with pleasure for your pleasure, but free does not mean "no cost" (http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/selling.html) . I spend all my time developing Elive. It is my choice. Your choice is whether or not downloading Elive is worth a donation.

For the next stable release, it is planned to allow the download totally free. Instead of pay for the download you should pay just for the installation. This means that the live mode is entirely free and you should pay only if you want to install Elive in your hard disk.

You can't download the stable release without donating to the developer...(aka paying him)

Yeah, yeah, that is if you can not figure out how to get the free downloads.:P

Simply, meaning that the developer often provides free downloads usually the first week his announcements are posted on Distrowatch.

lol, if you think the truth is spam, that's your decision.

Anyway, you're obviously circumventing the developer's methods to raise funds, ethical or not, which I doubt he/she would appreciate...

I'm done with this though...I've made my point.

No circumventing, that would prove illogical...sense there are more simple, elegant and ethical ways to get Elive.

You could also join the developers team.

I payed the guy $5 for ELive... I didn't like it, but I am not complaining. I mean come on... it was only $5... If you can afford a computer, what's $5 for the guys efforts...

I like free stuff just as much as the next guy, but some people just don't get it seems.

There is nothing wrong or unethical about charging a small fee... what would be wrong and unethical is not providing the code or be allowed to change, improve, modify and share it.

As far as Elive 1.9 Compiz... I tried it for a bit, I like the look and feel, but then again I am a E fan.
But it is still in development and resizing windows still needs work it seems.

That said I been using OpenGEU since Feb and am quite happy. I can do everything I was doing in windows before moving to Ubuntu. And I experience less crashes than I did in windows. Matter of fact I go for days on end without any problems. currently using 8.10 and some Ecomorph features, not all work yet but I am ok with that.

My kids put OpenGEU through much more than I since they use WINE to run a crap load of Windows games and they not once have come to me with any complaints... so in my exp with 5 computers using it, it isn't as bad as it sometimes made out to be... but it certainly isn't for everyone.

Wow, didn't even realize they still made OpenGEU, but then I may be confusing it with Maryan Linux or OzOS?

That's cool to know, working together in Open Source is always advantageous.
