Earlier I was watching an old More 4 program on Ubuntu where Mark Shuttleworth was interviewed: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1341210584930823491

At about 40 seconds into that video they play the Ubuntu startup sound after the Windows one. I'd totally forgotten that before Edgy we had a really nice startup compared to the current one which tends to scare my fellow commuters on the train. :)

Anyone else think the old one was nicer? (I've just changed my Jaunty startup sound to the old one :) )

I don't care for it, particularly, but that's just me. You might like the "Dream" sound-theme. It has much... mellower... startup and shutdown sounds.

Ah, took me a minute to find you a link... I used to use this sound theme myself; I rather like it.

The start up sound is one of the very first things I modify with every new Ubuntu install. Always turn it off.

Yeah, actually that is a nice startup sound.

I don't mind the Dapper startup sound, but it's rather long and sounds quite cold. At least the new sound has a bit of warmth, and is more cheerful. I prefer both sounds to the default KDE login sounds, which sound so "generic" to me.

+1, start up sounds are annoying, especially in a public environment.
