I am planning on using two partitions, one to have "/" on it, and the other for "/home".
I was just wondering how big the "/" partition should be. I generally have no idea how big this should be, for a decent amount of programs say, so i was just wondering roughly how much?
This is on a 160gb hard drive by the way.
Thanks,
adam

10-20GB should be enough ( if you don't plan to install 10 applications per day :D ).

Depends though, is this just a desktop or will it be doing other things.
Often software will use space under /var
MythTV would soon eat through 20GB

Yes I forgot to mention this is a netbook so I can't imagine using too many programs a I will try to keep it clean.
I'm thinking about 30gb then.
Thanks for your help.

I install lost of applications and libraries, and find 5-6GB more than sufficient.

Hmmm my desktop takes about 15 I have just checked... I think I might go 20 or 25.. I mean I would rather have 10g spare than run out.
