This is a useless thread! However I was just curious how geeks/gurus here do it. For me its always:

I'm using GNOME so I go to the top right hand corner, click on my name and go down to "Shut Down" and then click "Shut Down" on the dialogue box. I'm not has terminal-inclined as you guys. :)

I never shutdown. Ever. For anything.

Even if the electricity to my house were to go out my PC would draw its power straight from the Ether.

I don't, I have a laptop and I always put it in sleep mode or hibernate :)

I use the shutdown icon on the panel. I couldn't be arsed to open a terminal just to shut my machine down.

su
shutdown -r now # or I do the below command
reboot

Never shutdown, only reboot after a kernel update. I use suspend/hibernate instead.

My laptop with the button in the right top.

For my server it depends:

sudo shutdown -h now
sudo shutdown -r now
sudo reboot
sudo halt
sudo poweroff
sudo init 0

If you wonder why I shutdown my server. I'm still playing with it in Virtualbox ;-)

The only reason to shutdown is if you got a bad OS. Or are going to take the computer apart.
When i have to take my computer apart it is sudo halt.
Elso sudo reboot every time my arch want to update the kernel.
