This happens when I plug in any external device, HD, USB flash media, etc.. I have found similar posts but no resolution.

Does /media exist, and is .hal-mtab within it?

/media would be in the "File System folder" right ? If so I do not see a folder named Media

That may be the problem. Try this in a terminal:

sudo mkdir /media
The problem may be because all media other than ubuntu itself are mounted in /media, even temporarily, and that is where .hal-mtab gets created.

OK I made it, now if I restart will it create the ./hal-mtab

Hi Steve

Goto the Applications Menu and choose Accessories then Terminal

That will launch a terminal window where you can enter the command

That error is telling you that the folder is already there. Rebooting won't help.

You said that you thought that the OPs issue was the same as yours, can you confirm what issue you are having.

Hi

When I first installed ubuntu 9.04 and then added 3 to the broadband network, all worked fine. Plugged in the dongle to the usb which showed up on places and connected via top right tool bar (visible networks). After surfing for an hour, I lost connection, the 3 icon disappeared off the desk, places and top toolbar. I noticed that the system did download and install updates. Not sure if that caused the problem.

I love the ubuntu, but I have to use windows to get on the web... bummer ;(

Have a look on the back of the surfstick and get as much information as possible from there. Also, in a terminal run
lsusb, then paste the output here, it will give us a starting point

Searching around, it appears that you have a ZTE MF622 modem from 3. They are also able to supply a different one (huawei e220). The huawei e220 seems to work out of the box for most people, so if it is possible, ask 3 for a replacement.

I found this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=665332 which shows a "how to" in post number 4.

Maybe this will help you...sorry I can't help more, I don't have the device myself. If that doesn't work, I would recommend creating a dedicated topic in the "Network & Wireless" forum.

Hi

Thanks for your your response. I had a look at those links and tried to make it work, but no joy. Sadly I think that I'll have to rely on Windows to connect to 3 mobile broadband.

I can't understand why when I do a new install of ubuntu 9.04, all works fine for about an hour, I have done it 3 times now.

once again thanks for your help.

Steve
