okay so i have an Archos 605 wifi which has basically run its course it was a good device linux OS 160gb hard drive BUT it was a bit big and slow and you had to pay for codecs in order to play other music formats...

now im looking at 3 new devices to replace this one.

the Archos 5 which is supposed to be a huge inprovement from the 605
faster processor, better touch screen but still have to buy codecs =|

Cowon S9 look pretty slick but my concerns are space i see it goes up to 32gb but i wonder if its exandable with sd card, but the size of the device and touch screen and new UI intrigues me to it

and the Cowon 02PMP which like the S9 is flash up to 32gb BUT is does come with a SD slot for more space.. device is slightly bigger touch screen 4.3 inches.

sooo if it were you which would you go with? and if you know of any other PMP devices share i'd love to see:D

but right now im leaning on the S9 because of its size...

I would stay far away from another Archos player unless you really need high capacity since they have a bad business of model of selling addon packs that should be included in the first place (as you said). Between the S9 and the O2, definitely get the S9. They have similar specs, but the S9 has an AMOLED screen instead of a plain LCD and a more premium feel. You should also look at the the Samsung P3. If you still want WiFi in your PMP, take a look at the Walkman X (which is $100 more expensive than all the other players here) and the Touch (if you don't care about Linux syncing).

Weird pattern I noticed, none of the fancy new touchscreen PMPs have memory expansion (S9, P3. Walkman, Touch). Also I realized that it's a bit hard to find a store that's selling the P3 probably because the P3 is new and they're still clearing out the old P2s.

A Nokia N810 and a good sdhc card should do.

I was thinking that too especially with how Linux-friendly it is. But I heard video playback is a big sluggish, and don't forget it only accepts mSD, so it's a bit more limited.

Have you thought of the SmartQ 5? Runs Ubuntu too and takes an SD card.

http://www.smartdevices.com.cn for the homepage; or

http://www.smartqdevices.co.uk for my forum thats only a day old and needs some support! :)

They are fantastic devices. As well as being my video and mp3 player, I have Wireshark and nmap installed on it for scanning/pen testing too! :)

The iRiver P7 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16855150103) or the new Zii Egg (http://www.zii.com/Developer/Landing.aspx) might work.

But n900 is coming October..better specs and it's a phone as well.

I've got an Archos 5. The massive storage capacity is probably the best part of it. The battery life is bad though, and it takes a long time to charge. I've never had any problem with codecs. It plays MP3s fine and (unlike my iPod Touch) has played every AVI I've put on it without conversion. I'm not sure about any other music format though, as I've only used MP3.
