Ok i know the basics of a programming language and i know many alredy (basic, C#, python, visual basic) and i am preety good with C#. But is java better than C#?

I am interested in making games (easy way to learn how to program for me)
so if java is better than C# all around... is there a place like the microsoft beginner corner for java programming in linux?

Thanks!

Well, these tutorials (http://eclipsetutorial.sourceforge.net/index.html) are quite basic but very good as not only an intro to Java but to Eclipse and test-driven programming (which is a great habit to get into).

If what you're after is making games I would give Java a miss. Best place to get started is with Python, as the excellent pygame library makes game programming extremely accessible. Check this out (http://www.pygame.org) for more info.

Good luck!

There are many libraries and platforms to make games with Java. Examples are the LWJGL, Slick and jMonkeyEngine.

Python on the other hand has pygame, and .. just pygame really.

Well, fair enough, though IMHO I think Python is best suited for a beginner as the simple syntax allows someone to concentrate on the problems of game programming instead of the intricacies of the code language.

This is where I learned some things about Java, directly from the source of Java itself ...

As for C# > Java, you will get a host of varying answers, I would say, no, not better just different. From what I have heard, many more people seems to like C# but that's just in the circles I know. Mileage may vary.

EDIT: Oops, I am so used to Windows, sorry. Still stuck in Windowsland in my head. Good luck, I hope someone can help.

If you already know C# it should be fairly easy for you to learn Java. The Javadoc for the API is a good place to learn I think, since one of the big differences between C# and Java is the API's. Apart from that it's really just about learning to make good and well-structured object-oriented programs - and that applies to both C# and Java.

As for making games I'd recommend looking into LWJGL which is (among other things) an OpenGL binding for Java. Whatever OpenGL-specific stuff you learn you can also apply if you decide to learn C or C++ one day.
