The Alternate Installer CD is a text based CD that sometimes will work better especially if you are getting weird video errors. You can check it out here (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate)

Are you sure the DVD is good? Does it boot on other computers? Did you try the "Check Disk Integrity" menu item? I don't know much about burning DVD's, but if you burn a CD too fast, often the disks are no good. You have to burn an image at a slow speed, 4x maximum on a CD. High speed burns are fine for video or music, but not for disk images.

You can burn the Alternative Installer CD to a DVD if you want, you can burn it to whatever you like.
