for a simple install you can use Gnome Do (in the repos), and then change it's appearence to a dock view, or you can try AWN (http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-AWN-on-Hardy-Heron-82611.shtml). AWN is a little harder to install for newbies, but learning's the fun part right?

Cairo-Dock is popular to. Download the newest DEB-files here: http://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=8724

AWN is not hard to install. It's in the default repository if I'm not mistaken. Open up synaptic and search for advent. I believe it's advent-window-something. Then just tick the box that says 'start with system.'

You can install a better version of AWN than is in the repositories by adding
http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ppa/ubuntu
to your sources list under system-administration-software sources under other sources tab.

Install the packages avant-window-navigator-trunk, awn-settings-trunk and for extras:awn-applets-c-core-trunk, awn-applets-c-extras-trunk, awn-applets-python-core-trunk, awn-applets-python-extras-trunk
You can start AWN under applications-accesories.

You can install a better version of AWN than is in the repositories by adding...<snip>

...just don't be surprised when it breaks. Cairo-Dock, or GLX Dock as it is known now, appears to be more stable.

I personally like wbar. It doesn't screw up like the others or slow my box down

I have used Cairo, Sim and AWN. For easy set up and install I would say AWN. You can still customize it reasonably well and it's easy to do so.For Cairo (which I am running now), it can be a bit more complicated to customize.
