I realise that CTR-ALT-D will show my desktop, but it also hides my screenlets. Is there a way to just minimise all of the windows without hiding the screenlets?

If all your screenlets are set to be sticky, switching to another desktop will do somewhat that. I don't know if hotkeys are setup for that, on mine, its Ctrl-Alt-Left and Ctrl-Alt-Right.
Not exactly the answer, but that's how I get around it.

That's not what I am looking for, but thanks for the reply. Does anyone else know of a way?

I'm guessing it will probably involve either wmctrl or devilspie.
If neither of those can do what you want then you're probably out of luck.

If you use compiz open system > preferences > compiz config settings manager. Click General Options and find the check box for "show hide taskbar windows" and make sure it is unchecked. This works for conky but I assume for widgets as well. At least it's worth a try.
