It depends on what you want. If you want long term support, go with 8.04. If you have newer harderware 9.04 may be a getter choice, although I just installed Jaunty on my older HP laptotp and everything just worked. The only thing I'm not sure about is suspend, cause I haven't tried it yet.

I agree with Cariboo907, but not with his example. It's newer hardware which may be a problem on an older kernel such as in 8.04, that does not support it yet.

If you don't have very new hardware you might go for 8.04 (or rather 8.04.2, or 8.04.3 if that exists, to avoid having to do a too large upgrade after install), and if your hardware is new, you might have a bigger chance of success with 9.04.

8.04 is supported for three years, so until April 2011.
9.04 is supported for 18 months, so until October 2010.

9.10 is also available now.

You could install both - if you stick with ext3 filesystem, you can even have a shared swap and shared /home folder. - Best of both worlds.

8.04 is rock-solid. 9.10 is a little faster and has the newer hardware-handling and notifications - Very nice.

I've used the non-LTS versions and ended up wishing I'd used the LTS. 18 months isn't a very long support period.

Burn 2 live cds and try them both. Decide for yourself which you like better.

I wouldn't recommend installing 9.10 yet, 1) on a "production" computer, or 2) if you would hate a not so stable Linux. 9.10 is still under heavy development and will be released as a finished product next October (that's the .10 in the version number).

One of the mainest main reasons that I use ubuntu is the LTS versions... and 8.04 has been out for a year. it should be very much stable at the moment... I rememeber when I firstly installed I had a couple of minor issues that took a couple of months to get resolved... Now if you want tabbed browsing in nautilus then 9.04 should be your choice... Just my two personal cents :).

Strongly support the LiveCD approach before installing either version. I have a tablet PC that runs everything just fine on 8.04 but fails miserably on 9.04. Best to find out what WILL work before you do the install.
