Hi all-

My wife is being good enough to let me get a lappy for Fathers Day.
I am trying to decide which brand to get and was hoping I could get some advice here.

I am trying to decide between the System76 with Ubuntu or the Dell brand lappy's. Has anyone here had experience with either of these with Ubuntu?

Does System76 build good machines? What about Dell and Ubuntu?

Thanks for your help.

I'd go with System76 (http://system76.com/index.php?cPath=28)or Dell's Ubuntu machines (http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/notebooks/laptop-inspiron-1545/pd.aspx?refid=laptop-inspiron-1545&s=dhs&cs=19&~oid=us~en~29~linux_2~~).

I've used both and honestly I hate to say it but on the netbook class the dell machine is a better deal.

Both System 76 and Dell have specific support forums on these boards. You should swing by those sub-boards and see what you can see.

Dell: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=342

System 76: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=341

im gunna come right out and say dell is a piece a ****. System76 doesnt really make thier laptops, they are provided by a company called Clevo that makes, in many peoples opinions, including mine, the best laptops to date. The support is phenominal from what ive heard (never had to use em) and they have a presence on this forum, dell does not. Also, they dont rape you upgrading parts during checkout which is something every other computer company does. They do have a laptop for pretty much every use so you should find something that suits your user style nicely.
