After updating nautilus a few days ago, plugging a monitor into my machine shows the standard desktop (with icons) but displays a Ubuntu gray background rather than my desktop picture. I've tried killing nautilus and relaunching but I get the following error:

Unable to add monitor: not supported.

The monitor I've been using is the one I've used with this machine for quite some time. I've tried rebooting, but not such luck. I found a forum post with some similar problems earlier but I couldn't find anything helpful.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I just noticed that my xorg.conf shows my graphics driver as "ati". I checked my old conf and it showed the driver as the proprietary "fglrx". I know ATI doesn't support X.org 1.6, but it would seem that I've been running 9.04 fine since it came out. Is there something about the newest Nautilus update that is incompatible with the open source ATI drivers?

I just want my desktop picture back!
