I am looking to do the LPIC-1 certification soon copmrising exam 101 and 102. After that i will probably do the extra exam for ubuntu certification.

I was curious if anyone here has done it before and could recommend a good book/software to aid passing. I have been using ubuntu for nearly two years now and i am pretty comfortable using the terminal. I am also soon to graduate with an IT degree from university so i can pick things up pretty quickly. How much time would i need in order to pass?

Many thanks

Some information can be found on the Ubuntu Certified Engineer (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EngineerCertification) regarding what might be covered on the 199 test.

Books that might help.

is the IBM tutorial for the LPIC good? i'm wondering because my company uses a lot of IBM software, such as lotus notes and clearcase, and they're some of the worst applications i've ever seen (slow, buggy, unstable, terrible interfaces). i've come to associate IBM with incompetence and poor quality, but hopefully their LPIC info is better than their windows software.

it's nice to know that there's formal training for the LPIC available. unfortunately, the pricing (well over $5000 US) is far, far too expensive for me, as i suspect it would be for most people looking to get the LPIC on their own. hopefully i'll have a company willing to pay for training like that some day.

abrupt subject change: everyone should note that the study guides on the ibm developerworks site are currently out of date. there's a notice there stating that updated versions are in the works.

I haven't seen any formal training centers for LPI in the US. Red Hat will do formal training but you have to go to them and costs about $1000 per session.

my uni didn't go so well but I'm looking to go straight into IT (i failed chemistry, but CBA to spend 3years to get a degree in IT), so i'm taking the LPIC 101 exam on wednesday, I'm teaching myself (fully getting my head round regex now (dear god perldoc perlretut is looong)) because i know most of the practice questions, I'll post next thursday if the 101 exam is a harder/easier than those posted online.

how did the exam go? i'd very much like to find out if there are any practice questions online that are comparable in difficulty to what's actually on the LPIC. the study questions in my sybex LPIC-1 study guide are supposedly (according to the reviews at amazon.com) far easier than what's on the exam.

the more realistic practice questions i can find, the better. i did my MCSA last year, and i found studying practice questions at least as important as studying the microsoft manuals themselves. unfortunately, it seems much, much more difficult to find good LPIC practice questions.

I only did 101, it was pretty much what I expected from the example questions and detailed objectives here (https://www.lpi.org/eng/certification/the_lpic_program/lpic_1), just two notes:
1) The difficulty was something like this (http://gnosis.cx/publish/programming/exam101.html), although those questions don't map well to the objectives anymore (oh and some of the answers on that site are wrong)
2) yes they really do still have questions about lilo (well i got 1 in my exam)

You will note from the spec that its all CLI based, so it's worth knowing your tools and redirections, i taught myself by reading man pages and online tutorials.
