hey guys,
i am using 8.10....i am unable to connect my sony ericsson phone through data cable in ubuntu for file transferring....though it works fine in xp (don't need any pc suite)....how can i solve it....?

Well first rule of thumb is that what works in XP might not work in Ubuntu, its not Ubuntu's fault mind you but those who make the device are clearly to blame.
As for the Ericson actually working with Ubuntu, well look here:

Not saying it will work though, there are some devices that are far from linux friendly.

SonyEricsson phones work best via Bluetooth. In saying that you should still be able to connect via USB. When you connect the phone, via USB, you may get a menu appear on the phone asking you to set the phone into file transfer mode or phone mode. Set to file transfer mode.
Initially you may need to go to Places-Computer to see the phone (and memory card) and it will be displayed as if it's a disk drive. If you go straight to Places-Removable media instead, initially, you may not see the phone.

thnx guys for helping.....i followed the site & got my problem solved....
