Upgrade using (but not within) Live CD

Hi,

I have Ubuntu 8.04 installed on my brother's laptop.
I had the Ubuntu 9.04 CD from ShipIt.ubuntu.com.
How to upgrade it using the CD I got?

My idea is just backup the /home/user to another place/partition and install the new one on top of the old one. Could I do like that? Or is there any other way to upgrade?

You can not upgrade with live CD and you can not skip versions.What are you asking and trying to do is O.K. All you need is to make separate home partition (http://www.ivankuznetsov.com/2008/04/moving-home-to-its-own-partition.html) and after that instal Ubuntu 9.04 on top of root partition.It will be fresh install,not upgrade.
