Unix was indeed a pioneer, I think both Linux and BSD live up to its legacy quite nicely despite not being "official" unix.

Without Unix there would be no linux or bsd. The free software movement was started in and grew up from the unix user/hacker community. They wrote and shared software for years before bill gates showed up with his proprietary model of software engineering. Needless to say, there was a backlash and that is what got GNU/FSF off the ground. By the early 1990s all that was missing from GNU to make it a completely unencumbered OS was the kernel and linus got that off the ground.

Unix is the great mother, captive, but the mother of millions who are free.
