So how often do you have to use a Windows PC or another system other than Linux? And how is it? I have two jobs so I have to use Windows XP 7 days a week for work and I must say, it's irritating haha they both constantly freeze and luckily one computer I'm the only one that use it so I can maintain it myself BUT still, it's Windows lol

Right now I barely ever boot into Windows, because Ubuntu's great with all my everyday tasks. But I'll be using Windows a hell lot more in the next 3 months now that school's over and I have time for games! :D:D:D

Yeah I hear ya on that one, mine requires office and Quickbooks along with a bunch of other programs, plus I think my boss would have a heart attack if I installed Linux on one of the computers haha

i have to admit i use plain open solaris on two desktops and its what i use for sitting here and writing right now. i have a pc standing on my living room table and i am online all day long. i use open solaris on that now.

i use ubuntu or crunch bang on my laptop and i have older computers i use what ever the specs can allow.
mostly debian but i play around wiht minix and freedos also.

so i guess i am not as much a linux user anymore than i used to be. but no windows and no macs.

All the time. I use it at work and at home. I need some Windows only applications for both work and home, and I don't believe in virtualization or Wine. Seriously, if you need it, you need it, there's nothing wrong with that.

No, that's called an opinion. It doesn't really spread fear, uncertainty or doubt. Here are some examples of each:

Fear.

Windows users will get pwned by viruses.
If you use NTFS/EXT4, your data can be corrupted.
Windows $NEW_VERSION will be the end of Linux.


Uncertainty.

I'm not going to use $THING any more because $COMPANY is dropping support.
Now that $COMPANY owns $COMPANY2, is it time to switch operating systems?
$EVENT does not bode well for $OS...


Doubt.

Linux isn't ready for the desktop.
Windows is just too far behind the times.

Windows 7 will destroy Linux. It has all the hardware support that Linux lacks. Linux just isn't ready for the desktop.

Now that right there is what FUD is all about. FUD is neither fact nor fiction (it can be either), FUD is not just something you disagree with, FUD is not just making an opinion. FUD is effective because it's almost invisible. It's important, though, to be able to recognise it when you see it. Hope this helps.

I use windows at work. It is an XP system and quite old and crippled by admin restrictions. It is, however quite stable and reasonably fast (on a core2 duo with 2Gb of RAM)and quite adequate for the type of work I do. I work in a big organisation that also has a considerable Linux/Unix investment (in servers and scientific computing) but the desktop is Windows only.

Our next 5 year IT contract has just been finalised and there will be an "experimental" move (back?) to thin clients and virtualized desktops. I haven't asked whether there will be a Linux component to this (because our IT crowd get a bit annoyed with me if ask too many "technical" questions and I don't want to be blacklisted by the helpdesk).

I use Linux (Ubuntu or variants) exclusively at home - as does my wife. My kids both have Windows boxes (One Vista and other using Windows 7 RC). They are serious gamers so, apparently, Linux is out of the question.

Some people say it to fit in or whatever. Others say it because they actually feel that way. Whatever the reason, FUD is a marketing tactic and "$X sucks" is not an example of it. There is just no appeal to fear. Just a bog-standard, irrelevant statement of an opinion.

I have Windows in a virtual machine for school and random other stuff. Right now I am using Win7 RC. Also, I use Office 2007 in Win for all my document/spreadsheet/presentation work. I just like it more.

I will probably run Win7 native when Starcraft II and Diablo 3 come out. And probably for Star Wars: The Old Republic. All of which I am excited for.

All the time. Im an avid gamer, so often use Windows for that purpose. I will never just use Linux, just as I would not go back to just using Windows. The benefits of using and being proficient in two Operating Systems are amazing. Its like being fluent in two languages. As it stands, there are things that I need Windows for, and things that I need Linux for. So I'll keep both at my disposal. Why put all your eggs in one basket? That bunch of info wasn't really random, but specific information focused in response to your assessment of the meaning of FUD. The info was meant to:


Explain the true meaning of 'F', which is 'Fear', and give examples of possible fear tactics.
Explain the meaning of 'U', which is 'Uncertainty', and give examples of how to make uncertain rumors appear to be truths.
Explain the meaning of 'D', which is 'Doubt', and give examples of how to get people to lose their faith in something.
Give examples of quotes that collectively spread fear, uncertainty, and doubt.

I would be Windows free...but I'm a CS student and my college requires some programs be written with Windows in mind so I either have to program a lot at school in the labs or have a dual boot set up...plus some of my games that I like to play once in a blue moon won't run with Wine.

I'm posting this from Windows XP SP3. I dislike Windows, no matter what the version, in the extreme (before you ask, yes, I have various Windows 7 builds at my disposal). Microsoft is the incumbent, Linux the potential usurper. Most people and companies that rely on the Microsoft monopoly wish the status quo to be maintained for their own reasons.

There is no shame in admitting you need a Microsoft product in a personal or professional capacity, Microsoft lubricated the palms of many for this to be the case. Truth be told, I would not be surprised if most of their profits are earmarked for this purpose and this purpose alone.

Next Monday I start as a temp at a company that specialises in packaging materials. They have a new (to them) fangled web interface to a database that is all Microsoft, and I am the lucky one who is the data input flunkie.

www.urbandictionary.com defines a flunkie as "a bitch, a follower, a gopher". I know I should bow my head in shame, I'm not proud, but I gotta make ends meet. Follow the money, go with the flow and other such cliches. :-(

Hey I totally hear ya, my company is going down the drain and I've been pulled away from my usual job to do data-entry, some graphic work etc (mostly data-entry though lol) it's a load of crap haha it's for a new site their trying to get going.
