Sound - how many bits of software do I need?

I have pulseaudio, phonon, ALSA and esound - do I ready need all this? Sound seems to be working fine but I'm having freezes and wondering if removing some of this stuff might make things less complicated?

I had to uninstall DigiKam as it wasn't working too well on Gnome and kept warning that Phonon wasn't working - anyone any views - nice, simple ones!
