I am attempting to upgrade my Ubuntu distro. I have been running 8.04 and have finally decided to upgrade to Jaunty Jackalope, but I need to first upgrade my distro to 8.10. I was going to try the network install, but my wireless connection is a bit squirrelly since I'm in a rural area, so I was going to try and update to 8.10 by cd, which I happen to have a copy of.

So my question here is how do you upgrade by cd? I tried to do it the way it's explained in the Ubuntu Wiki, but nothing happened. I have absolutely no idea how to upgrade from the CD, so any information about how to do it would be appreciated.

Hello Jimmy,

Upgrading by CD usually means doing a fresh, clean install. If you do, you might as well do a fresh install of 9.04 Jaunty. Some questions to ponder:

1. Do you have a separate home partition. If so, a manual install on top of the old 8.04 root whilst maintaining/not formatting your home partition needs to be done.
2. Have you tested the 9.04 LiveCD to see how your machine works with it?
3. Save your files in a safe place ... any install has a risk in losing files.

Hope this helps. Let us the forum know if you need assistance. Good luck.
