I've used ubuntu for over a year. Works great but can't get my ati radeon card to work properly. Did install sabayon and solved the problem. Sabayon feels more user friendly. Don't have to download drivers and codecs. The system does it for you. Will give it a run to see how it works.

Why not give Linux Mint a try at the same time? =]

Mint makes some very intelligent choices about what should or should not be installed, and adds nice graphics as well, while retaining the underlying stability and capability of Ubuntu (which, of course, benefits from a very large base of users and developers).

I totally agree about Linux Mint. It has "envyng" which will install the Nvidia or ATI drivers. I'm using Mint7 (Gloria) right now,...and my Nvidia card installed like a charm. Linux Mint has all the base of Ubuntu,..with all the extras like easy driver install, and the multimedia codecs. I've never used Sabayon,...and being familiar with Ubuntu already,..Mint was the natural way to go.

I went to their web page. Looks pretty polished. If it works as well as it looks is the key for me. May give it a whirl to see for myself.

Agreed. I was a mint user for quite a while, and I would reccommend mint over just ubuntu to a beginner... just make their life easier when they are learning.
ALSO mint uses thunderbird as the default email client. I didnt have a problem with evolution until I tried to use the calender... it crashed and burt! Thnderbird is much more stable, less windowsy, just as I like it.
I assume ubuntu used evolution as default as its the default gnome app?

I am awlays a bit weirded out when people resort to installing an entirely new distro to get functionality you can have in almost any distro out of the box. envyng is in the Ubuntu repositories, too, y'know. I know it's useful to have it all there when you install a new operating system, but nuking your old OS just to get at that seems a bit overkill when all you really need to do is install restricted codecs and drivers yourself.

Sabayon is a great system however back when I used it I had some stability problems as well as the fact that it was the epitomy of bloatware however I've heard that their last release was quite solid and much more slimmed down.

I thought Sabayon made for an AWESOME live cd, but I found package management very poor. Perhaps you could try Mandriva or Fedora. Or even something else.

sabayon was great live, but horrible installed, for me. emerge is the slowest, most miserable mess i've ever used. best of luck.

Sabayon doesn't use portage and it's emerge front end, although it can still be used, Sabayon stresses Entropy as it's main package manager with the equo and spritz frontends.

How does emerge compare with apt-get source? I've not really used either very extensively.

I agree with chucky. Emerge was horrible. Portato was a joke and didn't even begin to work. I love the hell out of Sabayon as a live cd, but would NEVER consider installing it ever again. (i tried several times on different hardware) Sabayon tried to take Gentoo and make it into a user friendly distro. EPIC FAIL. Those that want the "work" and "learning" of Gentoo should just use the original Gentoo. Sabayon is trying to make a peace activist out of a murderer. Won't happen.
Nothing against Gentoo as a distro, but it's not the most user (noob) friendly to begin with. I just thought it was a little foolish for Sabayon to try and tame a wild beast. But I applaud those that love and enjoy Gentoo. It's just not for me and most other "average" users.

Apt-get is widely regarded as the most user friendly package management available. Some may disagree, but I've tried them all, and found nothing easier.

How do you define user friendliness in a command line frontend for a package manager? Besides portage was never developed with the goal in mind to be user friendly and thus can hardly be compared in that aspect.
