Hi Folks,

Here's the thing: I work from home and use my linux box for both work and leisure I currently run Thunderbird where I collect mail from both my personal and work email accounts. These are seperate mail boxes and until now served me well.

However I need definition between home and work also I am now starting to use online calendars and more functionality than Thunderbird can easily give for my work stuff.

So I am wanting to migrate my work mail to a different client. I have tried Evolution although it is powerful in many ways there are too many frustrations with it including the inadequate junk filters and most importantly the lack of good html email support. I also need to use a standard email template for all outgoing work mail and Evolution just doesn't seem to do that (reading previous posts that conclude this). (Please don't post about the evils of html mail messages, I know the issues and arguments. I happen to think there are bigger threats to bandwidth than my 50k template file.)

Also I am just not keen on Evolution it feels like it was very capable a few years ago, but not sure it's development has kept up. Having said that I know that folk of mail servers swear by it, so I guess it has good functionality for that stuff.

So I need a decent MAPI client that can integrate with ical / google calendars, supports email templates, tasks etc. I know there was a thunderbird branch project that offered some of this stuff, but can no longer find it.

I guess the question I am asking is there a functional alternative to Thunderbird and Evolution. These are the two biggies as far as most users are concerned, but surely there is a third way! :-)

Cheers.

Not familiar enough with it to tell you if it satisfies all of your conditions but, after Evolution Mail and Thunderbird, I know that Claws Mail is very popular.
Again, I don't know that it will do everything you want but it might be worth looking at.

I use kontact. I found a review (and comparison to evolution which you may find handy) here: http://fosswire.com/post/2009/01/evolution-vs-kontact-part-2-kontact-conclusion/

Check out Zimbra desktop (http://www.zimbra.com/products/desktop.html), it may fit your bill.

However, there's a catch, Zimbra downloads all your messages to the local disk to speed up searches. That's why I'm back using Thunderbird.

Hi,

Take a look at kmail/kontact, has everything you'll probably ever need.

Regards, Ellgor.

ellgor - thank you this is exactly what I need, it seems to be most things Evolution should be.

Just one question - is there a way to configure what fields of the Calendar Kontact prints out? I need to save space when I printing and want to remove 'location' from appointments just when printing.

cheers again

I think SpiceBird (http://www.spicebird.com/) is supposed to be a mozilla-based offering to satisfy your needs.

I've been intending to give it a try for ages, but am just too lazy!

The PPA: https://launchpad.net/~spicebird/+archive/ppa

Kneewax.

here are my observations etc.....

To create a "template" just use the signature tool, downside is that it will always appear at the bottom of your mails... but you may be able to change that?

I never had a problem getting evolution to collect mail from my main personal mailbox, and from the works gmail accounts.

I know it is quiet easy to start 2 different instances of any email client, so maybe just have one on each desktop... which is what i used to do.

junk filtering....

I must admit that this didn't work well for me, until I started using the <junk> icon, now (suddenly) all my junk is filtered out for me. Only downside is that is doesn't highlight the "new" messages in the junk folder, so it makes it less "obvious" which are the ones I need to quickly scan over.... but at least it now picks up on the 100 odd junk mails I get every day!

Hope that helps you out, how are you going otherwise with your other solution you are trying out?
