On windows I can press the middle button and do this in firefox:

but not in linux... how can I enable it?

I'm not sure, how you do it, but there are some X settings to enable something like it.

On the other hand, the middle button servers as the second Copy & Paste method, which is, IMHO, far more comfortable ;)

Type "about:config" in the address bar, find the key "general.autoScroll", right-click it and select "Toggle" to set the key's value to "true".

In firefox got to Edit-->Preferences-->Advanced and enable use autoscrolling
