Hi all

I have a dual boot system - WinXP and Ubuntu 9.04.

I noticed today that watching the same flash movies within the same version of Firefox, uses up more CPU in Ubuntu.

Within WinXP, Flash only uses 60-70% CPU, in Ubuntu Flash uses 100%, which means my noisey CPU fan kick in sooner and more ofter.

BTW no other apps are running on either system during this time.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Have you tried using the swfdec codec? It's a default GNOME Flash Player.

...and more ofter

doesn't it mean "...and more often" ?

on my computer with Kubuntu Jaunty, playing Flash uses 30%. The whole system (incl. Flashplayer) needs 55% Cpu load.

I guess it was easier for them to dump every image on surface than bother with hardware acceleration.

Same for me as well. Flash 10 made it better for me but still takes up more resources than Windows. Watching HQ YouTube video it's at 40% CPU (Pentium4 2.8GHz).

for youtube try using the plugin in totem. or try miro or moovida. they will all play youtube without using flash.

also if you install the flash bock plugin, then you can have firefox only load and play flash files that you want. this saves you wasting CPU on banner adverts.

Yes. As said before, it's just another example of a company half-heartedly supporting Linux. But, it's better than nothing...

Wow, im glad to see that im not the only one having this problem, i thought that i would finally have to blame the problem on my old computer, (ol' faithful) and get an upgrade, but whew, dodged a bullet, ol' faithful will live to see another day. And this post is pretty recent too, all the articles that i've been reading on this problem linked to pages that were written a few years back. But anyway i'll hang in their and try the suggestions mention above and hope a solution comes soon, i cause im enjoying the freedom that linux has brought me, and dont want to switch back, locked in and forced to stare at a window.

You are definitely not the only one. There are new threads about flash performance pretty much every day.

Firefox freezes often because of slow flash loading on two 64 bit Jaunty machines. (I had the same problem like 1 year ago and it hasn't been solved) These days I just use the Flashblock extension which takes care of the issue. The extension has given me more control and caused me to rethink what Flash applets I want to allow to load on a web page. Nice!

Sounds like you have a problem with your flash installation.

Do you have 64-bit Ubuntu?

Flash has always been a pain in the neck for me on Linux. I browse with noscript enabled, and I have a few sites whitelisted (youtube, vimeo, homestarrunner, etc). This helps kill the pain of crappy flash banners and what have you. Adobe really need to pull their finger out.
