Or is it completely safe to remove nautilus? I want to remove nautilus and then install a modified nautilus with some tweaks from source. Nautilus is the file manager which is a pretty essential part of the system I would guess? I can easily pull this off, right? Nothing will break? :D

I would be very careful removing it since it also manages some desktop stuff and device mounts. Look in the Configuration Editor under apps and you will see some of the things it does. If you want to upgrade it compile the new version and let it upgrade without removing the old version.

Could you be more clear?
you would that nautilus just open a certain kind of file with a specific apps?

Okay, in a nutshell

-Remove the pre-installed nautilus
-Compile custom version of nautilus
-Install custom version of nautilus

I can do this, yes? Nothing will break, no?
