Howdy,

My brother is an idiot.

He had a dual boot setup with 8.10 and Vista. 8.10 was the default.

He decided that he didnt want ubuntu anymore so he formatted the drive. Now GRUB reports error 21.

He has the ubuntu live disk but Im not sure what he should do to resolve the issue.

any help appreciated.

Not in any particular order:

Option 1: Reinstall Ubuntu
Option 2: Reinstall Windows
Oprion 3: Tease your brother

If he really doesn't want Ubuntu he needs to repair his MBR by using the Vista DVD. Follow this how to : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1014708

If he wants Ubuntu do the above then #1 & #3 from lisati's post.

P.S I am assuming he formatted the Ubuntu partition because you said he doesn't want Ubuntu anymore. If he formatted the entire disk then he should set up the partitions prior to installation, then for ease install Vista first , then Ubuntu, then you can tease him. File a report here when it is completed.

hopefully he had a backup in case he had some important data! Look at the bright side, you can use this as a learning experience for him. You really aren't learning a lot unless you mess something up! Maybe you can show him how to set up partitions using the partitioner so he can get an idea of how it is used. Then walk him through the install. Two very important tasks he can learn now.
