You can install Kubuntu or Ubuntu on that computer. It does have the ATI video card so I would personally try 8.04LTS or 8.10 instead of 9.04. I would also choose a dual boot configuration until you become comfortable with Ubuntu. If it did not come with the OEM Windows disks, I would check for a utility to make your own CDs/DVD (see owners manual) before installing anything on the computer. I suggest running the Ubuntu Live CD first before installing the new OS.

My advice to start with is download / acquire a copy of Ubuntu and Kubuntu both about 700mb. The pop them in your cd/dvd drive and load up the "live" cd and test both. If you go the live route nothing will be installed on your hard-drive (it loads into RAM). You will get an idea of compatability and whether you prefer the look and feel of Kubuntu or Ubuntu (I would personally err on the side of caution and go with Ubuntu as KDE4 desktop can be a little tempermental under Kubuntu........ in my opinion;)).

By the way if you intend to download, you will need an iso burner (free windows burners can be found doing a google search) and to boot into the live disc you will need to restart your laptop. (If Ubuntu doesn't fire up you may need to go into the bios and change the systems disc boot order.... putting your dvd drive before the hard-drive).

Also if you decide to install check out the Ubuntu site for help partitioning you hard-drive if you want to be able to boot Windows and Linux. Check out this link:

Hope this helps and good luck:D
