Can I upgrade from 8.4 to 9.0.4 or what ever the latest version is and what would be the highest resolution in this version.

If you mean upgrade as in keep your apps and settings intact but just upgrade Ubuntu versions, the answer is no -- you can't skip versions. You have to use Update Manager to update to 8.10 and then use it again to update to 9.04.

The versions have nothing to do with resolutions available. The resolutions are a combination of your monitor, video card, video memory, and video driver. In other word, if you're limited to 1024x768 in 8.04, upgrading is not going to provide you higher resolutions.

Before upgrading, make sure you disable all ppa's and third party repositories, then make sure your current version is fully up-to-date. You can then update to 8.10 and then 9.04.
