so I was messing around with the video drivers, someday I'll learn, and now when I try to log on to a gnome session, it starts loading normally, but then goes to a white screen, if I turn my computer off I see my back ground and all that for a half second.
when I log in to xfce it works fine, any ideas?
possibly even just how to restore the default ati drivers would probably work but as hard as I try I can't find the command anymore

I have no experience of ati, so what I say may be completely off-beam, but a couple of thoughts anyway.
If you are getting a white screen in gnome but not in Xfce, this doesn't sound like an xserver or video driver issue - more a gnome specific problem, but I have no idea what.
But assuming it is video driver related, have you tried booting up in recovery mode and running xfix?

yeah, I tried xfix, but that never seems to do anything for me, it lists a bunch of options, then runs through some stuff really quick but never seems to fix a problem when it involves X

I had this problem for a while. I ended up fixing it by reinstalling compiz.
