How to Add a useful sidebar

Hey all,
I've been browsing around gnome-look.org and I came across the following:

See that sidebar on the side labeled "Infoboard"? How would I go about getting something like that for my desktop that can read system info?

That looks like conky (http://conky.sourceforge.net/) with a wallpaper trick. It is available in the ubuntu repositories (apt:conky). Check also this site (http://conky.linux-hardcore.com/) and this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=281865) to see how users customize it.
