Hi, I'm at my wit's end. I've been trying to get Linux (various flavours, latest is UBuntu 9.04) working correctly with the ATI proprietary driver for the Radeon 4850 and failing miserably.

I've just installed Ubuntu 9.04, everything was fine - without the flgrx driver. I updated everything and then installed the driver via the Hardware Driver option on the System menu. I restarted and after running grub etc. I'm faced with a blank screen.

Has anyone got Ubuntu working properly with the Radeon 4850 - if so, would you please like to share how you did it - you'll earn thousands of brownie points

I have a sapphire ATI radeon 4850 and am currently running ubuntu 9.04. I had 8.10 installed originally and just upgraded from that. Maybe 9.04 has some problems with the drivers so my only suggestion is to try upgrading from 8.10.

check out the just released 9.6. I had issues as well with it I believe, still using the much smoother open source drivers (radeon or radeonhd).
