What video card do you have? Also, can you successfully run ubuntu from the install cd menu?

You may need to download a driver for your graphics card.

But if you boot from the install cd and select try ubuntu without changing anything (or something like that) at the opening menu, does it run on your machine? If not, then there clearly are problems.

Can you boot from the CD? Put CD in, select it as your bootable. When menu comes up, instead of clicking install, click on "Try Ubuntu without changing anything."

Does that work, or does it give you the same error as booting from your hard drive installation?

1 did you burn at low speed? 4 to 6x
2 did you do a checksum?

You can checksum the ubuntu iso in XP if you install that program^. This checks to
make sure no errors were introduced into the file when you downloaded.

It seems like it lets you right click on the iso in xp and send to checksum (it's
been a while since my xp days...)

Yes, I agree, the CD is probably dead, try burning another one and booting directly from the CD(Try Ubuntu without any changes to your PC or whatever).
And I don't really think it's about videocard, Jauntu 9.04 supports everything common like Nvidia cards.
Anyway, that's quite odd.
