I was just curious as I see some others on the forum with a Linux User # XXXXX and Ubuntu User # XXXX and was just wondering how/if it was possible to get one. I am just trying to get as involved as I can and was also looking into some sort of Linux certification. I know that sounds strange, but I am taking my Cisco certification later this month and after that wanted to pursue some sort of Linux cert. I am reading as much as I can and have become addicted to Ubuntu and it's community/forums just to read posts and learn. Does anyone have some advice and/or guidance for me as to how to take this to the next level?

Thanks in advance for all of ya'lls time and attention,

Yes, but its far from a certificate. It's just a counter that you get from a website.

I understand that my questions were actually unrelated, the first was just a curiousity as far as how/where those Linux User #s come from, but my second issue concerning Linux certification of some sort was actually more serious. Is there any official certifications for linux, or do I just find a place locally that does linux classes and get some token certificate from them. Thanx again for any advice/assistance.

well, after a littlle research I have found not only a linx certification, but even a Ubuntu Certification available. As soon as i am done with the Cisco cert I believe I will be going for those next (not sure in which order, but who cares?

You can get CompTIA Linux+ certified, there are also Red Hat certifications available (RHCE) and a host of other domain specific certs. Personally I think the Red Hat certification is more useful than Linux+ but it's nice to have both.

Look into "Red Hat Certified Engineer." I think it was one of the first widely recognized Linux certs. Here (http://gocertify.com/faq/linuxfaq.shtml) is a nice overview of some of the certifications.

As for the "registered Linux user," that is done from this website (http://counter.li.org/).

The counter number I have is more for statistical purposes and my ego than any reflection of my geekdom. More information can be found at http://counter.li.org/ and http://ubuntucounter.geekosophical.net/

There's always the LPI certifications.
It's a non-distro specific Linux certification.

Something I'll hopefully get someday - just need some time to study.
