I haven't been able to update for a while now.
Today I tried again and it still gave an error (see below)
I have tried a bunch of different download sources but in doing so has made no difference. I don't understand what is going on. Suggestions?

Are you using intrepid or jaunty? Your profile says jaunty but you have entries for both intrepid and jaunty.

It is indeed Intrepid that I am inquiring about - sorry for the confusion. I am on my work PC. My own person computer has Jaunty.

This is the line that is triggering the error message
deb http://<my.favorite.cran.mirror>/bin/linux/ubuntu jaunty/
Open the file using
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and place # in front of that line mentioned above and save. Then run in terminal
sudo apt-get update
In case you need that repository for anything, replace jaunty with intrepid in that line.
