remix and kubuntu desktop

i would just like to know if it is possible to do the following before i blow it. (again)

i am running ubuntu 9.04 remix. is it possible to go to the synaptic program manager

and download kubuntu-desktop and see if i like kubuntu.

please let me ask one more question.

when i run ubuntu 8.10 or xubuntu, i connect to wifi with no problems.

when i run kubuntu 8.10 or 9.04, no connection.

what does this mean? should not all ubuntu, xubuntu and kubuntu connect ?
