What electronic music should I check out?

Eisenwinter
May 29th, 2009, 03:10 AM
Anything by Aphex Twin (aka Richard David James, look him up in wikipedia).

Check out Cosmo, Highko (psychedelic trance artists).

Check out Entropy (darkpsy artists).

And finally, check out 2 albums, called Entheos Audio Archive (there's 1.0 and 2.0 vols).

+1 to Aphex Twin

Nothing beats the old school artists like Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michael Jarre, Brian Eno, Vangelis and Kraftwerk when it comes to electronic music, but it might not be what you had in mind :D

I'll just toss a couple out there... I used to listen to Sasha & John Digweed's Northern Exposure: Expeditions over and over and over... good for coding when I was feeling drowsy. ;)

Future Sound of London (FSOL). Lifeforms and Cascade are two that come to mind.

Well, Kraftwerk and Jean Michel Jarre to get you accommodated to the 'feel.' Like many people here, I'm partial to Aphex Twin, but get his Selected Ambient Works and maybe Classics, because they're the most accessible. Autechre is great too, but stick to the early CDs.

I like the 80s stuff, particularily poppy one-offs such as Bronski Beat, and classic acts such as Depeche Mode. On the different side of the 80s, there's the 'techno' Cybotron which is absolutely fantastic and I'm partial to the sole album by Liaisons dangereuses too. These days I'm listening to a lot of Venetian Snares (look up Hajnal and Szamar Madar as they're relatively accessible).

This is the most unexhaustive list imaginable. YMMV.

"Good" is the kind I'm looking for. :) Anything, really. That's like asking for "good" guitar music. Basically any music at all can be done electronically; the samplers and synthesizers are just another class of instruments, along with string instruments, brass instruments, wind instruments, and percussion. It just happens to be very versatile.

I don't really consider myself an enthusiast of "electronic music," for the same reasons I don't consider myself a fan of "guitar music."

I'm a big fan of Lorin Ashton (the leader of the "Bassnectar" project.) http://bassnectar.net/home/
I can't remember how I found this guy. He's fairly prolific, having released several albums. He's got pretty liberal views on filesharing-- whenever an album of his goes out of print, he encourages people to bootleg it instead. He relies mostly on live performances, and he doesn't pander to the mainstream, which is why you probably haven't heard his stuff before. For best effect, listen on some quality headphones, or a nice big speaker setup with a subwoofer. Unless you can hear the bass, you just won't "get" it. This song is a good example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4eCjMhFiIU

Also, when I'm doing homework, and I just need something to drown out distracting noises, I use www.di.fm (http://www.di.fm), which hosts a lot of Internet radio stations with different genres of electronic music.

In any case, I have to also recommend Aphex Twin. His work is very broad, so you can probably find something you like within his work. Check out "drukqs."

Similarly, Squarepusher is really good.

Okkkkaaaay. That's pretty vague. Pick any arbitrary track, somebody will have that in the "good" bit of their personal musical venn diagram ;)

Have you got a Last FM account? If so you can use their "similar artist" service to start getting suggestions for things you might like.

Here's the default list for similar artists to Daft Punk (http://www.last.fm/music/Daft+Punk/+similar). Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, Royksopp, Underworld, Leftfield and Faithless are some of the ones that stand out on that list that you might like. Hard to tell though, as Daft Punk are quite eclectic, so it's hard to pin down exactly what you might like about them.

I'm an electronic music junkie.

I just list some of my favorites in each genre I listen to:

EuroDance

Lasgo - Gone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh-u7vwUjYY)

Zornik - Scared of Yourself (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kNJL8M1cs8)

Iah Van Dahl - Castles in the Sky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjTV8i_KjXM)

Sylver - Turn the Tide (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KbGJcxenDc)

Trance

Absolom - Baby Boomers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU6FQbQv5nY)

Dj Wout - Mastermind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHy8Iqggr9o)

Three Drives - Greece 2000 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-G-_mPPAQ0)

Tiesto - Adagio for Strings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5xjIpsHVYQ)

Club - Hard House

Asphai - Good Night Ravers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75hZ9Ya7iJ8)

Jones & Stephenson The First Rebirth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqIHVJX8HRU)

Robert Armani - Hit Hard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VOpFnn3Zi8)

Cherry Moon Trax - Acid Dream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e541H1V_ahw)

Techno

It's hard to pick songs as I only listen to these in DJ sets.

If you like the harder techno, I can suggest Dj Rush, Pet Duo or Frank Kvitta if you want to go mental.

I'm not a fan of the more minimal techno, but you can check out Dave Clark or some like Carl Cox.

Hardcore

3 Steps Ahead - Cloud 9 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VB9ESlKhl4)

Endymion & Nosferatu - Act Of God (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNJC2_WZg_g)

Masters of Ceremony - Hardcore to the Bone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOvSqaodvF4)

Evil Activities - Do You Like Bass (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPaZTkdIkJU)

Switch - Chill

The Knife - Silent Shout (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxqeRMoYA5g)

Kenny Hawkes & Louise Carver - Play the game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2F8LiELLVE)

Laurent Garnier - The Man With The Red Face (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UDzAv-twYA)

Reese - Rock to the Beat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZuuPVk8e9Q)

I could go on and on, but this will have to do.

I think that's a generalization.

Some of the Aphex Twin music is inaccessible, and clearly not to everyone's taste. That's the equivalent of saying, if you don't like Mozart, you won't like classical music. Not the case.

For some real bands:

Viola (http://www.violamusicclub.com)
A Finnish electropop duo. The music is light, with a melancholic flair.

According to the band themselves:
We're Viola.

Two guys influenced by beautiful heartfelt music, ***-shaking beats, sub-par humor and hidden messages.

We're the ones sitting in the corner of a hot discothèque, watching others have fun.

We make music to dance to - for people who seldom dance outside the dancefloor of their minds.

Keywords (or like kids nowadays call them, "tags"): escapist, stargazing, silly, energetic, outsider, electronic, melancholic, enigmatic, hopeful, fun, free

All music is free and under a creative commons licence, too.

Processory (http://www.last.fm/music/Processory)
A side project by Finnish electronic music veteran Jori Hulkkonen and a friend of his, Jerry Valuri. Very dreamy, and just too damn good electropop.

Sohodolls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soho_dolls)
The group hails from London and plays (according to a friend of mine) "just the kind of freak electro you might listen to."

White Rose Movement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Rose_Movement_(band))
Another Londonese electronic group, they have roots in post-punk. The music is aggressive, with many songs being largely bass-driven. The vocalist's high shrieks may not appeal to you at first, but WRM is definitely worth a try.

You can also get lots of good ideas by plugging the various artists mentioned into pandora.

I've always liked scott heron's stuff, most of which is published under the pseudodymn, prefuse73 and works with elements of hip hop and turntablism. His other pseudonymous works are interesting too because, since he now lives in Spain, they are based on Spanish music.

Andreas Vollenweider, Don Dorsey, Tomita are three old-school that are also good. I think the preferred term for these guys(first and last) would be "space" music or new age, though. Don Dorsey does classical but with an electronic twist. Don't use big speakers up loud, though, if you live in a small flat... ;-)
