View Full Version : [ubuntu] X server crashes on start up if screen is not physically connected

May 28th, 2009, 11:58 AM
I'm trying to configure a Jaunty machine for home server purposes.
I wanted to use vncserver to create the X environment, but all I get is the "root weave" so I figured I'd use the desktop sharing feature on the native display.

Everything works fine, unless I boot the machine without a screen connected (as I'd like to, operation should be remote only).

I'd prefer having the option to start vncserver displays instead of using :0

I've seen several multi user setups with authentication and whatnot and that's overkill for me.

It seems I found some answers here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VNC.
Since I haven't tried anything yet, I'm just guessing this will allow me to circumvent the use of the :0 display altogether
