Hi there,

Are there any plugins/applications/hacks/tweaks I can use to prevent GNOME desktop icons appearing in sequence in the top-leftmost available space?

Better still, can I just hide the desktop icons altogether?

Ideally, I'd like to specify a given area of the desktop within which they can be placed,.

I'd just like to leave the leftmost area of the desktop clear for the nice SysMon Screenlet, without having to occasionally have to move it back and forth to move new desktop icons away from under it.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Corrected "Right" to "Left" - I never got the hang of those... :-p

Yes. Open the gnome configuration editor (Alt+F2, gconf-editor), and disable the /apps/nautilus/desktop/preferences/show_desktop checkbox.

You can try the Folder View Screenlet: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Folderview+Screenlet?content=102890
