Tux should be ashamed, whatever sex he or she turns out to be. Causing confusion about it; fragmenting communities; destroying lives. Just who the hell does he or she think he or she is?

I think Tux is an entity that can be described based on several assumption and facts

Assumptions
1. that tux is an entity class animal
2. that tux is a mammal there fore has a gender
3. there are basically two genders male and female

if assumption 1-3 are true then Tux must have a gender

Fact
1. Gender mammalis' males like gender mammalis' females
2. Gender mammalis' females attract gender mammalis' males
3. 60% of gender mammalis' females have more weight below the waist

You should know your honour that Tux attract a lot of gender mammalis' males (linux geeks), and has more weight below the waist. A lot of gender mammalis' males than gender mammalis' females like Tux (most gender mammalis' females (of species Homo sapien specificallY) like the butterfly )

therefore here i rest my case beyond doubt,

TUX IS DEFINITELY FEMALE.

back on the subject, I always thought of tux as being male since it is based on the word tuxedo that refers to a male garment.

Ok, now we must first declare a few facts,

1) Wikipedia is the source of all facts
2) Google is the source of all information

Now, by asking our source of all information for information about 'tux' the lord google refers us to the source of all facts, wikipedia, which states

"Tux is the official mascot of the Linux kernel. Originally created as an entry to a Linux logo competition, the image of the mascot is the most commonly used icon for Linux, used in many flavors showing Tux in one way or another. He is also used in many Linux games, which are usually look-alikes from other mainstream games."

Case closed,

ACTULY why do i constantly see *nix?
why cant they unix?

*nix refers to all Unix-like OSes. This includes Unix (duh!), Linux, Minix, the various BSDs, plus others I haven't heard of I'd imagine.

It would be incorrect to call Linux "a unix". But to say it's a *nix is perfectly fine. Plus it's a very hackerish, geekoid kind of term, using the asterisk wildcard, which appeals to users of *nixes. Or is it *nices?

Female Tux versions in Video Games

In some games that star Tux, a desire for more gender neutrality has resulted in allowing the players to play as either Tux or his female friend "Gown". Gown is variously depicted as being a pink version of Tux (XTux) or as having a somewhat less fat appearance and wearing items of clothing such as a red and white short skirt and a hair bow (eg TuxKart and A Quest for Herring); she is somewhat inspired by Daisy Duck. In SuperTux and SuperTuxKart, there is a different female penguin called "Penny" who is purple and white (SuperTuxKart once had Gown and still has a map called "Gown's Bow"). Tux's relationship with Penny is comparable to Mario's relationship with Princess Peach as seen in Super Mario Bros. In the upcoming Tux 2 there is supposed to be a female penguin called "Trixi", and in FreeCiv the female leader name for the Antarctican civilization is "Tuxette".
he is male.

yes off course penguins like linux.

in fact most penguins use linux as operative system while some mainly older teachers still use a commercial penguin OS called pengUNIX and a few experimental penguin hackers has adopted to use of BSD and solaris. the most well knows figure of this penguin hacker culture is a expert penguin hacker by the name of TUX.

penguins are very social and have there own highly developed culture . its a common thing among penguins to spend much time with their computers now after they stopped fishing and started to make their living trading with humans.

humans have found the penguins computing technology very useful and penguins have their own special computers systems with small hard drives they call them a pen drive.and now when they sell the pen drives to humans they are sometimes sold under the name usb sticks. here http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ is a typical penguin page that shows humans how to use the penguin hard drives.

if you dont believe me then look at this page http://soli.inav.net/~dance/janehome.html that shows that penguins are very social and musical and creative beings .
