Install conky (it's in the repos), then go to here to get some ideas for what you want it to look like http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=281865&highlight=conkyrc There's also a how-to here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6365702

Nah thats not it although i just installed it anyways...its more along the lines as a slide plane/ sidebar like the vista one if you know what I'm talking about. Its' an actual toobar but displays comp. stuff.

A "tool" that displays that kind of stuff is gkrellm. You can get it through Synaptic.

It's similar to conky in its usage but it's not as detailed as conky because you can only choose from predefined options.

Another option could be screenlets.

Aww wait thats not it but ill give you a screen shot of what is it......it is the bar on the bottom left, but there is a more advanced version of it that I've seen...it includes the date and calender ect...

Thats conky.

Bottom right is conky, the bar that has all the icons at the bottom in the centre is called avant-window-navigator

Right now there is not much like the Vista sidebar for Ubuntu, though there are a few promising tools.
One is google gadgets, then there is Karamba, and the ever developing plasmoids for KDE4.

I would say KDE4 comes closest to a vista like experience in terms of having a sidebar, there are many widgets for it called plasmoids that give you clocks, calendars, etc.
But KDE4 is still very new and therefore I would not say install it if you are not a experienced user.

Gdesklets is another one but I think it sucks, there are many themes for it yes but its rough around the edges.
