Is it possible to do this in terminal?

I don't know how to do it that way. I would do it through the update manager. It will prompt you that a newer version is available.

I don't think a full terminal upgrade is supported anymore accept for the server version of ubuntu. You can download the alternate 9.10 disk and initialize the upgrade from the terminal.

I was having same problem. Logged into my 8.04 to discover that we are now on 9.10 and system did not give me auto-update. Im going to go and do the Jaunty upgrade you guys recommended, hopefully it wont castrate my graphics card settings.

Good luck with the version that hasn't been "officially" released yet. Don't forget to give your feedback to the testing team!
