Isn't this OLPC scheme what Mark Shuttleworth has set up?

Powerful mate revs up remote students

MOVE over conventional laptops - these Territory kids are crossing the digital divide with "green machines".

Weighing 1.5kg and just 24.2cm long and 22.8cm wide, the compact XO laptop is being delivered to disadvantaged primary school-aged children across the nation as part of the One Laptop per Child initiative.

About 100 students from Shepherdson College on Elcho Island, about 550 km northeast of Darwin, were among the first to receive the new learning tool.

Outback students at Newcastle Waters School, north of Tennant Creek, and Rawa Community School in WA also got the laptops.

No mention of operating system, just this:

The laptops are loaded with more than 30 educational and entertaining programs to help them learn - as well as browsing the internet.

Generally, if it is a ******* o/s, it gets mentioned, so it is quite possible that a Linux based o/s is being used.

One Laptop per Child Australia executive director Rangan Srikhanta said yesterday's launch was the start of a program they hoped would see 400,000 laptops distributed to children living in remote Australia.

He said the charitable program, which started in the US, needed more support from the Australian business community.

I hope they don't waste the money giving them to kids who don't have access to electricity.

The XO is really cool especial the linux software... It just looks so cheap and with windows it's only a cheap laptop with out any of the networking features that make it cool

Mark Shuttleworth is not involved.

The OS is [usually] modified Fedora with Sugar graphical environment. Otherwise, it's Linux/Windows dual-boot.
