Firefox starts automatically at every startup, however, it has no entry in Startup Applications and I can't see how else it should start automatically

Thoughts?

Hi there, please don't expect me helping you out, 'cause I wouldn't know how. But your problem looks a lot like what I heard a friend of mine talk about: at last he figured out that his PC was infected by a Trojan, and was inlisted in a net-bot. At the end he installed a completely new machine through a new IP-adress and got finally rid of it. I hope your problem is much easier to solve, but as I mentioned before: I am a complete rookie in solving PC prolems.
I whish you the best of luck.

try logging into a tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and see if it tells you that firefox can't find a display. After that you can hit Ctrl+Alt+F7 to go back to X.

If Firefox does tell you it can't find a display, then it is probably in the startup programs file (like .bashrc). If not then it's a problem in X.
