I have an existing Ubuntu 8.10 installation on my comp and I want to upgrade to 9.04. So I downloaded the alternate CD to upgrade, but the upgrade dialog does not come up. I might've gotten a bad torrent or something, but it just doesn't come.
Plz help

[EDIT]: This is an 8.10 install that I was able to upgrade to from 8.04 by CD. Also, I'm wondering if I'll have to change Software Sources...

How did you burn it? When you open the CD, do you see just one large file that you've downloaded or do you see a bunch of files and directories?

Basically, the way to do that is to reinstall 8.10. There is no simple or easy way to rollback to a prior version.

You could upgrade to 9.04 by hitting alt + F2 and typing "update-manager -d" without the quotes.

lindsay- my internet sucks.
taurus- I downloaded it via torrent and burned the contents of the .iso

i also ran the md5sum check and the cd was valid.

Maybe you should try upgrading from Update Manager (System>Administration>Update Manager). When the upgrade was available for me, there was a button at the top of the update list that allowed me to update to 9.04. It didn't work on my PC but it worked very well on my laptop.
Good luck.
