View Full Version : [all variants] -generic vs -386 kernel

Dear all,

can someone give a short explanation what the differences between the -generic and the -386 kernels are?

I recently got a new Dell Lat E4300 laptop on which I installed the latest Ubuntu version. As kernel the -generic version was installed. However, it seems in certain aspects (e.g. power management, graphics support) the -386 kernel runs better than the -generic one. Only downside is that the -386 version does not seem to support the dual core, at least I only see 1 CPU, but all other drivers should be the same or not? So why is there a difference in the hardware support?

Thanks for any enlightment :)
