When I start X it comes up in 1280x1024 resolution. I can then change it to the correct resolution (1920x1080) but on restarting X it goes straight back to 1280x1024.

I don't understand it. There are no errors relating to the resolutions. It seems like Nvidia just all of a sudden decides to set it to 1280x1024. It's frikken weird.

Bump

Another thing to note is that I previously had a different monitor attached that was set to 1280x1024.

Have you tried running:

sudo nvidia-settings

madverb
May 28th, 2009, 05:47 AM
No, but I modified the Main Menu link to 'gksu nvidia-settings'.
If you look at the xorg.conf you can see that it has been generated by nvidia-settings with 1920x1080 as the default metamode setting.

Where else would it be grabbing the resolution from?

madverb
June 1st, 2009, 12:26 PM
What config file in my home directory would be causing my resolution to convert to 1280x1024? I have moved all the hidden files and folders to a separate directory and logged out and back in and the resolution comes up correctly as 1920x1080.

Well, figured it out after much effing about. For some reason the gnome-display-properties or xrandr was over-riding the Nvidia settings.
I went into the gnome-display-properties and selected 'No' when it asked 'It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?'
Then I changed the setting in there and it fixed the problem. This is plain frikken stupid.
Thank you for your time... or lack there of.

Even better! Just removed the ~/.config/monitors.xml and now it completely ignores the gnome settings! Login is also much smoother now. This is really damn annoying.
