just re-installed for the third time( Jaunty).
-first time i installed duff Nvidea GeforceFX driver and could not reconfig...
-then, had working system for two days (without doing the proprietary driver upgrade).
-installed OpenOffice and one or two modules failed to install or config cleanly.
results, broken package management and another install...
have just reinstalled, and done system update.
i'm gonna hang fire on upgrading Nvidea driver until i hear more about this issue, and decide on a course of action.
The package management failure is likely down to a hang in Synaptic, while configuring OpenOffice-
i don't expect it's a repeatable problem. i'll post more as i get to using the apt resources a bit more.

What are the preferred tools for managing X.Org in ubuntu?
