I would have thought that Linux would be doing better than this against Windows. But, it looks like the use of Linux is declining overall?

What's going on?

Trend is negative for both. Then the one for Linux is because people have to google less for bugs and bug fixes. :-)

They are searching more for "Ubuntu" instead of "Linux", in fact the word "Ubuntu" is quite close to overtaking "Linux".

This is a very bad way to judge usage anyway. It's a measurement of searches, really I use Linux a lot but I don't really feel the need to Google it very often or ever.

Which is interesting... apparently most Linux users nowadays do use Ubuntu. I wonder how accurate these numbers are.

Google Trends ≠ Conclusive evidence, by any means.

well it makes sense if youve got a problem your gonna look for a fix /answer specifically related to your distro first

Absolutely. Just messing around which is fun.

You'll also notice that the very periodic spikes in the Ubuntu charts every six months are exactly around the time a new Ubuntu release happens. :)

Meh. Windows is trending downwards as well.

Remember: There's lies, d*mn lies, and statistics.

Id actually like to see Ubuntu use higher than Linux use. That would be a day to celebrate :)

That's impossible, seeing as all Ubuntu users ARE Linux users.

Oh yeah, but I like to see more people use Ubuntu than operating system!

Now what I would really love to see is the percentage of google.com visits vs. operating system.

This reminds me of the way people do things on Wikipedia. You might have a social club with goals and ambitions and over ten thousand members, but it will get deleted because:

Wikipedia says:

NN. Google returns only 30 unique hits. Delete. --someguy (talk) 10:18, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Comment. Is that really what we should be using as notability criteria? --quetiygh (talk) 10:55, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

I love how the ubuntu comparison shows two little peaks for 'ubuntu' each year, right about the time a new release is out. Very promising.

Apparently, more people are using Windows than eating:

Yes, we can get some useful stuff from google trends, but this really doesn't work. For example, when you say windows, how do you know your not searching for the little pieces of glass that are in your walls, or for the OS that MS makes.
